I have renovated an old Japanese house in Kagawa, one of the four prefectures of Shikoku in Japan. We use it as our atelier and fully enjoy the countryside living while there. Today, I’m sharing with you the photos of the town’s nostalgic charm.
One thing that many visitors notice upon arriving in Kagawa is how the mountains resemble illustrations from children’s books. Their shape is the kind you might expect if someone were asked to draw a classic mountain: rising slope, a gently rounded peak, and descending slope, all fitting on a single sheet of paper. Adding to this setting, the infrequent trains—operated only twice an hour with just two or three cars—run through wheat and rice fields. It’s quite charming, don’t you think?
We wanted to capture this charm, so we set out to drive around searching for the perfect vantage point. Eventually, we decided it was better to park the car and explore on foot. So, we parked by a wheat field and began walking up and down, looking for the ideal spot. And then we found it. We waited patiently for the train to pass by (since, as you know, there are only two trains an hour). It was so exciting to see the typical Kagawa mountain with the short train in the foreground, making us feel like kids again.
Kana’s Place は神奈川県の横浜市に、そして2拠点目の Kana’s Place 2nd は香川県にあります。2ndではキッチンと畑や庭を行き来して過ごすことが多いのですが、今日は香川のどかな風景をシェアします。
初めて香川に来た人は口を揃えて、「山の形が可愛い」「おわんをひっくり返したような山だね」と言います。そう、香川の山は「画用紙に山の絵を書いてください」と言われたら、多くの方が書くであろう形をしているのです。こんな絵本から飛び出して来たような山がぽこぽこと点在しています。
のどかな風景を作るもうひとつの要素が電車「ことでん」。全国の鉄道会社から、引退した車両を譲り受けているので、走っているのは古い型の電車。これが鉄道ファンの間では有名なのだとか。丸みを帯びた一世代前の電車が短い２両か３両の編成で走っています。
なだらかな山と、田畑の間を走る電車。鉄道ファンじゃなくても見てみたいし写真におさめたい。そう思って私たち（Kana & Chie) は最適な撮影スポットを探しに出かけました。
車でぐるぐる回ってみるものの、見つけられそうにありません。一旦車を停めて、農業道路を歩きながら探すことにしました。
ネットで探せばピンポイント情報が見つかったはず。でもあえてあまり詳しくは探りませんでした。散策中に見つけた麦畑にときめき、畑に植わっている花にはしゃぎ、山を色々な場所から見上げる。こんな道中の楽しみや気づきは、歩いて探し回ったからこそ。
そして完璧な撮影場所を見つけた瞬間。「ここだ！」っていう、まるで子供が、本当はみんな知っているんだけど自分たちが発見したと思い込むような、そんな純粋な喜びがありました。
一時間に二本しかない電車がくるのを待っていざ撮影。
私がとった動画には、Chieちゃんのカメラのシャッター音がいっぱい入っていて、電車が過ぎるまで息を止めていた2人の弾けるような笑い声も。とりあえず行ってみる、自分たちの足で探してみる、道中も楽しむ、その時が来るまで待つ。のどかな風景を探した数時間は、ワンクリックで物事が進んでいく今、忘れかけていたことも思い出させてくれました。
